It’s that time of year to show our HES staff how much we care…
Join the Parent Teacher Association by bringing in Treats for Staff
Wednesday-Friday before winter break
- Bring baked goods to the teacher’s lounge in the morning (room near cafeteria)
- Write a note of appreciation for the staff who care for your child
Email Mary at firstname.lastname@example.org to help with clean-up or simply bring something in!
HES needs you to volunteer! There are many opportunities to help out at HES–chaperoning field trips, monitoring the lunch room, and math and reading tutoring, to name a few. To offer your help, directly contact your child’s teacher, or Ms. Penate.
All volunteers need to get a background check and be cleared by Child Protective Services (CPS). There are several upcoming opportunities to do this. Mark your calendars to get this done so that you can help your child’s school!

On September 26, PGCPS CEO Dr. Kevin Maxwell came to Yogi Castle on Route 1 to answer questions directly from PGCPS families. The event was sponsored by Maryland Delegate Alonzo Washington.
Dr. Maxwell was greeted by a packed house, with parents identifying themselves as associated with Hyattsville Elementary School, Felegy Elementary School, University Park Elementary School, Riverdale Elementary School, Northwestern High School and others as well.
Dr. Maxwell brought eleven staff members with him, including the heads of Instruction, Maintenance, and Transportation, to ensure that he could answer questions on the spot, with appropriate and up-to-date information.
The HES PTA asked multiple questions, focused on the county’s Capital Improvement Program (CIP), and the need at HES for a new school building to replace our current outdated building.
When PGCPS previously studied all the capital improvement needs in the district, HES was ranked fourth most in need of reconstruction or renovation in the county’s CIP. Since that assessment was made, the schedule for such a replacement or renovation for HES has been pushed back to begin in 2020, with likely completion in 2024. The budget available for the project has also been cut.
The HES PTA continues to monitor PGCPS actions on this plan, and has been advocating for an appropriate time schedule, more funding, and continued maintenance support for our current building while our children remain in attendance there.
At the close of the Yogi Castle event, HES PTA President Marquisha Powell gave Dr. Maxwell a letter listing our questions and concerns (later followed up with an email), and invited Dr. Maxwell to visit Hyattsville Elementary.
You can read the letter to Dr. Maxwell here.
You can watch part of the Yogi Castle event on Facebook Live here.
