Native Plant Sale–Volunteers Needed

The Native Plant Sale is the PTA’s biggest fundraiser of the year! Much of the support that the PTA provides to the school all year long comes from this single event.

2013 NPS 04To make this successful, the PTA needs you to help out. You do not need to know anything about plants, native or otherwise. Mostly, volunteers will help customers separate the plants they want from others in the large containers they come in. We also need help with set up and clean up. Bring a pair of scissors to cut through the plastic tubs, wear clothes that can get a bit dirty, and come with a helpful smile.

You can sign up to volunteer online . Sign up for several time slots if you can!

New option for purchasing school supplies

Get all your school supply shopping done for next school year, all at once!

As a convenience to you, the PTA has organized online School Supply Kit orders for next school year. School supply kits will be delivered directly to the school, and will be waiting in the classroom on the first day of the 2015/2016 school year. It is not required that parents purchase a supply kit – school supplies can still be bought at the store prior to the first day.

Important Notes:

* The kits are $22-28, depending on the grade level.

* Please select the grade level your child will be entering in the fall when choosing a kit. The kit will include all the required supplies for your child’s grade.

* School Supplies for grades K through 2 are communal and will be shared amongst the class (the kits will not be waiting on your student’s desk for these grades).

* You will also have the opportunity to add much needed bulk school supplies to your order. These are additional supplies that your child’s teacher has indicated a need for, and is requesting donations. These supplies will go directly to the classroom and will not be included in your child’s school supply kit.

* The deadline to order supply kits online is June 12, 2015.

Directions for ordering:

  1. Go to http://www.shopttkits.com/
  2. Enter Account #: 86728 and click the Search Button
  3. Choose the appropriate kit(s). Remember to select the grade level your child will be in next year.

Early registration helps the school make appropriate plans for the number of students, teachers, and classrooms that will be needed in the Fall. Waiting to register until late summer or the start of school is disruptive for children at an already uncertain time.

Kindergarten registration for the 2015-2016 school year starts today, April 13!

Documents Needed:

  • Birth Certificate
  • Immunization Records
  • Proof of Residency: can be a copy of your mortgage statement, tax assessment or current lease

The HES office is open from 7:30am to 3:00pm for registration. Questions? Call Mr. Swann or Ms. Tolson in the office at 301-209-5800.

Why Use Native Plants?
-They grow with minimal use of water, fertilizers, and pesticides.
-Wildlife species have evolved with these plants and use them as their habitat.
-They are adapted to local soil, rainfall, and temperature conditions.
-They have developed natural defenses to many insects and diseases.
-Using native plants helps preserve the balance and beauty of natural ecosystems.

Show your support for a new building for HES

Thursday, March 19, at 6:30 pm
Come to Northwestern High School to show your support for a school-kids-schoolhousenew building for Hyattsville Elementary School.

The PGCPS Master Plan Support Project (MPSP) Community Meeting will be held in the media center at Northwestern at 6:30 pm. Prince George’s County Public Schools  invites students, families, and community members to attend this community meeting to learn how the district will prioritize future school construction and renovation projects for the entire county.

The portable classrooms on our playground and last month’s burst pipes are just two reasons why HES needs a new facility. By being present at this meeting, we can show the county our community’s support for putting HES at the top of the budget list for new construction funding. HES is already an incredible school, and our students deserve a safe, welcoming environment in which to learn.

HES is our community’s school, so please share this with other Hyattsville families and encourage them to attend as well. Dinner and child care for school-aged children (ages 4 and up) will be provided free of charge. Please call 301-952-6597 the day before the scheduled meeting to sign up for
child care services.

Print and share the attached MPSP Meeting Flyer to spread the word.
