DO THE MATH & COLLECT THE PLEDGES –
Math books will be sent home over spring break. Help your child keep-up with math skills and collect pledges online from friends and family. (They all want your child to be strong in math, right?) Meanwhile 100% of pledge dollars go to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital.
(Did you know that in the past 26 years, Hyattsville a Elementary school has raised over $86,000?)

Any donations not received online must be submitted to the school by Friday, April 24. Students raising $35 will receive a St. Jude’s T-shirt and with $75 in pledges a student will be rewarded with T-shirt and backpack.
Help make a difference for children in need (and learn math!) through the HES Math-a-thon!
The PGCPS Master Plan Support Project (MPSP) Community Meeting will be held in the media center at Northwestern at 6:30 pm. Prince George’s County Public Schools invites students, families, and community members to attend this community meeting to learn how the district will prioritize future school construction and renovation projects for the entire county.
The portable classrooms on our playground and last month’s burst pipes are just two reasons why HES needs a new facility. By being present at this meeting, we can show the county our community’s support for putting HES at the top of the budget list for new construction funding. HES is already an incredible school, and our students deserve a safe, welcoming environment in which to learn.
HES is our community’s school, so please share this with other Hyattsville families and encourage them to attend as well. Dinner and child care for school-aged children (ages 4 and up) will be provided free of charge. Please call 301-952-6597 the day before the scheduled meeting to sign up for
child care services.

When you become a member of the HES PTA, make a donation, or make a purchase at a fundraiser, what happens to your money?
HES PTA works to improve the educational experience for all HES students. We work together with the teachers and Principal Julia Burton to identify opportunities for assistance that will positively affect all students and families.
So far this school year, the PTA has supported HES through these donations and activities:
In the classroom:
Kiln for art room
Glue sticks and reams of paper for the art classroom
Games for indoor recess days
Worm bins for the 1st grade classrooms
Black History Month presentation of “The Birmingham Children’s March” for all students
At the school:
Paint, supplies, and painting of the indoor entry mural and blue retaining wall
Gardens & Grounds Day materials to beautify the school grounds in the fall (and snacks for volunteers)

It’s not too late to become a PTA member this school year!
You can help the PTA support Hyattsville Elementary School as a great place to learn. If you’d like to become a member, or if you haven’t renewed your membership this school year, please join us. Membership forms are also available on the PTA bulletin board near the front door of the school, and cash or checks can be given to Mr. Swann in the office.
You do not need to have a child at HES to be a member of the PTA. Strong community support for our neighborhood school is one of the many reasons HES is strong.
This is the first year of PARCC standardized tests. Testing begins in early March for grades 3-5.
Maryland begins full implementation of the new Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers (PARCC) state assessments in reading and mathematics this school year (2014-15). The new assessments replace the Maryland School Assessments (MSA) in English and mathematics in grades 3-8.
The new PARCC assessments are aligned to the Maryland College and Career-Ready Standards, developed from the Common Core and fully implemented during the 2013-14 school year. PARCC will provide comparability across states, and be able to assess and measure higher-order skills such as critical thinking, communications, and problem solving. The assessments will be computer-based and include a mix of constructed response items, performance-based tasks, and computer-enhanced items.
RESOURCES FOR PARENTS:
The website of the Maryland Department of Education has information about PARCC tests for parents at http://marylandpublicschools.org/msde/programs/parcc/parents/ You may also download an overview of PARCC for parents in English or Spanish.
There are tutorials available online. The purpose of these is to familiarize students with the computer based testing format and to gain familiarity with the technology platform. See http://parcc.pearson.com/tutorial/ .
Students can also take practice tests. They are available at http://parcc.pearson.com/practice-tests/ .
Today, February 11th from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. (Secondary Schools) and from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. (Elementary Schools), academic specialists will provide students with testing strategies and answer questions about the upcoming PARCC exam. The Portillos, a neighborhood family, with children at Hyattsville Elementary School, Frances Fuchs and Northwestern Senior High School lost all their belongings in a house fire in early January.
Please consider donating clothing, books, school supplies, toys, or money for groceries to help them as they get through this difficult time.

Each day, Ms. Dawkins will read a “Peace Quote” on the morning announcements. If parents would like to send in child-friendly quotes, Ms. Dawkins would be delighted to read them over the air and of course give credit to the parent and their child for submitting it.
Every day during Peace Week will be “Random Acts of Kindness Day”. Staff, students, and parents may act as observers to record kind acts during the day and submit them to Ms. Dawkins to read over the air. Each person identified as having committed a “Random Act of Kindness” will receive a certificate.

Teachers and school staff shape the minds of our children and our future. There really are no words to express gratitude for all they do. Join us in celebrating their commitment to our children.
You can participate in these three ways:
1) Bring a savory or sweet breakfast treat into the staff lounge one morning! (PTA will make sure there is coffee and tea, but parents are asked to add: muffins, hard boiled eggs, fruit, croissants, breakfast casserole, donuts, etc.) Sign-up today!
2) Write a thank-you note on a strip of paper, labeled with the staff person’s name. You can write a general note of appreciation, even if you don’t know the staff personally and sign it from “Hyattsville Parents” to let them know we are thinking of them. Place notes in the manila envelope on the PTA bulletin board near the front office by Tuesday December 16. We will sort and place the notes in staff mailboxes on Wednesday morning. 3) Have your child draw a picture or write a card, thanking the office staff, specialty staff or teachers for all they do to make Hyattsville Elementary a great place to learn and grow! These can also be left in the manilla envelope on the PTA bulletin board or delivered through your child’s classroom teacher.
