ADMISSION: Bring 1 package of un-used school supplies per family
(Suggested items include: construction paper, disinfectant wipes, dry erase markers, scotch tape, pencils, staples, ziplock bags, etc.)

Dress like a minion, bring your pillow, and come prepared to buy snacks!

For a full description of each officer position, see below:

President’s responsibilities include but are not limited to::

  • Preside at all meetings of the PTA and executive committee
  • Coordinate work of officers and committees
  • Be member ex officio of all committees, except nominating committee
  • Perform other duties prescribed in bylaws or as assigned by PTA or executive committee
  • Review and initial bank statements monthly
  • Represent local PTA at council meetings

TWO Vice-Presidents responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Act as aid to President
  • Perform duties of the President in that person’s absence or inability of that officer to
  • serve
  • Perform other duties prescribed in bylaws or as assigned by PTA or executive committee
  • See HES Executive Board sheet for listing of additional activities

Secretary’s responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Record the minutes of all meetings of the PTA and executive committee
  • Be prepared to read the minutes of previous meeting
  • File all records
  • Have current copy of bylaws
  • Maintain current membership list
  • Perform other duties prescribed in bylaws or as assigned by PTA or executive committee

Treasurer, responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Have custody of all funds of PTA
  • Keep a full and accurate account of receipts and expenditures including reconciliation of the bank statement each month
  • Make disbursements as authorized by the president or board of directors of the PTA in accordance with the budget adopted by the PTA
  • Present a written financial statement at every meeting of the executive committee, the board of directors, the general membership and at other times as requested
  • Make a final report before the newly elected officers officially assume their duties;
  • Be responsible for maintenance of such books of account and records as to conform to the requirements of bylaws
  • Be responsible for preparing and filing all necessary tax forms
  • Have the accounts examined at the close of the fiscal year and upon change of treasurer by an auditor or an auditing committee of not less than three (3) persons who, satisfied that the treasurer’s annual report is correct, shall sign a statement of that fact at the end of the report.  Perform such other duties as may be prescribed in these bylaws or assigned by the PTA

Light refreshments will be provided by the HES PTA, and Art show 2 toucansthere will be live music.

3) Lustine Center Gallery
March 15th – April 4th
This will be the first traveling art exhibit that art teacher Ms. Yazvac fundraised for in the fall.

 

 

Art Show, March 2

The Hyattsville Elementary School Art Show will be held on March 2, 2016 from 5:30-7:30pm at HES. The exhibit will display works from every single HES student. Light refreshments will be served, courtesy of the PTA.

Audrey Engdahl, a Hyattsville mom, and Mr. Heck, the pre-K teacher, will perform music for us. This is a free event and a great opportunity for HES families to come together.

New date for STEM Fair, March 16

The new date for the STEM Fair is March 16. The date has been changed to allow the students more STEM imagetime to prepare after the school closures during the blizzard. The fair will take place at HES from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm.

YOU can be a judge! Please consider serving as a judge for the fair. And please pass this on to anyone else who could serve.

You are cordially invited to serve as a judge for the 2015-2016 Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) Fair at Hyattsville Elementary School. Our STEM Fair will be held on Wednesday, March 16, between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. Coffee and lunch will be provided.

The goal of this annual event is to promote an interest and awareness in science. The STEM Fair experience will be a positive and memorable experience for our students, as well as for the community.

I hope you will consider being a judge this year and help make our STEM Fair a success. Please RSVP by Monday, February 29, 2016. You may email your R.S.V.P. to me at  nicole@pgcps.org. Please feel free to share this letter with other individuals who might also be interested in serving as judges.

PTA Meeting, February 2

Please attend the first PTA meeting of 2016 this Tuesday, February 2, at 7:00 in the library. pta-logo-clip-art-629009

We will be discussing upcoming events–the ice skating fundraiser and movie night (we need volunteers!). We’ll also talk about nominations for PTA officer positions for the officer elections in May. There will be a required vote on the PTA’s bylaws. No changes to the bylaws are expected.

Kids Want Your Board Games for Indoor Recess

board gamesCold, wet weather means indoor recess. Clean your closets of Connect 4 and send your Uno cards to HES! With distractions and technology at home kids might not get full use of their board games. But there’s hope for these toys – send them to your local elementary school and give them an extended life. Teachers have made requests (below), but are open to any donations.

DROP DONATIONS in the main office, or send them into class with your child. Buy games new from Amazon using our AmazonSmile link (and support HES twice!) or pass on your gently used games.

Library Volunteers Needed in the New Year

books 1Library volunteers needed in the new year!

HES is in need of more library volunteers in the New Year! With your help, HES is able to help students to easily find exciting books and check them out on a more frequent basis. Many of our volunteer opportunities are extremely flexible, so please consider donating your time to help our students feed their imaginations with books!

Assist with checking out books:

Volunteers are needed to assist students in selecting and checking out books. This allows students to check out books more frequently!

One volunteer is needed for each of the following slots beginning the week of January 12th:

Alternating Tuesday mornings from 7:45 to 9:00
Alternating Friday mornings from 7:45 to 9:00
Alternating afternoons from 1:15 to 2:00

Shelving

One volunteer is needed on alternating Monday mornings beginning Dec. 21 (times are flexible) to assist librarian with book shelving. Start date can be February, if preferred.

Adopt-a-shelf

Volunteers needed to adopt an individual shelf in the library and keep that shelf organized alphabetically or numerically. This task should be done regularly, but can be done at any convenient time.

Treats for the Staff, December 21-22

It’s the time of year to show our HES staff how much we care. Join the Parent Teacher Association by bringing in Treats for the Staff:

Show your appreciation in two ways:

  • Bring baked goods (sweet or savory) to the teachers’ lounge either morning (to the right on the ramp to the cafeteria)
  • Write a note of appreciation and drop it off in the staff person’s mailbox

Franklins Fundraiser, December 7th

Eat, Drink, and Shop!

Support HES by visiting Franklins, your locally owned restaurant! Eat, drink, and shop at Franklins all day long on December 7th. Before you leave, give your receipt to the host/hostess/cashier and tell them you’re there to support HES-PTA. Franklins will generously donate 20% of the pre-tax sale to HES-PTA.
