New HES principal meet and greet, August 11

HES Principal Julia Burton is leaving HES to take a position as principal that is closer to her home in Hello my name isVirginia. Acting Principal Teresa Bey has been appointed as the new leader for HES.

All parents are invited to a meet and greet with Principal Bey at HES on August 11, 6:30-7:30. Bring your students to say hello! The PTA will be providing light refreshments.

Ms. Burton had these words to share with HES parents:

It has been a privilege to be your children’s principal for the last four years. HES is a wonderful school and I have been very proud to be associated with PGCPS, HES students, families, staff and the Hyattsville community. It is a special, special place.

I have accepted a position as a principal that is very close to my home. The decision to leave HES was extremely difficult.

I am confident that the new leader for HES, Teresa Bey, also has a great passion for learning. The transition will be an easy one for you. Promise.

I am simply delighted for HES and for Mrs. Bey. It is a truly perfect match. When I think about the leadership profile that you created during the search time between Mrs. Washburn and my appointment, I see that Mrs. Bey has the very characteristics that you outlined more than four years ago.

I will always treasure HES. I hope to see you at the Zombie Run!

PTA supported professional development for HES teachers

When you join or donate to the HES PTA, what does that money go toward? One of the many ways that the PTA supports our students and our school is to support our teachers.

In June after school let out for students, three HES teachers went to school themselves to take a class. Sue Riebman, Nicole Entwistle, and Tracy Battle attended a professional development seminar/workshop with support from the HES PTA. The two-day workshop was put on by Creative Mathematics.

Ms. Riebman said, “This was one of the best math workshops I have been to. I learned over 30+ games Creative Mathematics logothat will help the children learn and practice every topic that we will cover throughout the year. I was also able to purchase some of the materials and tools that we will use for these games that I can share with my team. I am looking forward to sharing all these games with my K – 5 teacher friends at our staff meeting when we return back to school. Thank you so much. It was greatly appreciated.”

This isn’t the only teacher workshop that the PTA supports. More HES teachers will be spending time this summer at professional development workshops, with assistance from the PTA. And when school starts in August, our teachers will be excitedly awaiting the opportunity to try out their new skills on our students!

To help support the HES PTA, join here, or volunteer to help with our new fundraiser, the Hyattsville Zombie Run 5K race.

Rising kindergarten events this summer

If you have a rising kindergartner who will enroll at HES, here are three items to put on your calendar:

Registration is open NOW. Please go to HES to register your kindergartner as soon as possible. Registering helps the school make appropriate plans for the number of students, teachers, and classrooms that will be needed in the fall. Waiting to register until late summer or the start of school can be disruptive for children at an already uncertain time.

To register your kindergartner, bring these documents:kindergarten registration

  • Birth Certificate
  • Immunization Records
  • Proof of Residency: can be a copy of your mortgage statement, tax assessment or current lease

For pre-kindergarten, bring these documents:

  • Birth Certificate
  • Immunization Records
  • Proof of Residency: can be a copy of your mortgage statement, tax assessment or current lease
  • 2 pay stubs or tax return

The HES office is open from 8:30 am to 5:00 pm for registration. Questions? Call Mr. Swann or Ms. Tolson in the office at 301-209-5800.

For students whose language is other than English, please call ISCO 301-445-8460.

Meet other families with rising kindergartners this summer! The PTA is sponsoring a rising kindergartner playdate at King Park on Gallatin Street (across from Yoga Space). It will be on July 22, 5:30-7:30. Drop in anytime during that window to meet new classmates!

Kindergarten orientation will take place at HES on Thursday, August 18th, from 9 – 10:30 am. Kindergarten teachers will read a story and do an activity in the classroom with the children while the parents are getting information and completing paperwork with Principal Julia Burton. Later in the day students and parents will see the teacher to which students have been assigned when the class lists are posted.

Volunteer to help with the Native Plant Sale, May 13 and 14

It’s HES PTA’s biggest fundraiser of the year, and we need your help! Much of the support that the PTA provides to the school all year long comes from this single event.

The 7th annual Native Plant Sale is Saturday, May 14.

Blazing Star

Blazing Star

YOU DO NOT NEED TO KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT PLANTS TO VOLUNTEER! Mostly, volunteers will help customers separate the plants they want from others in the large containers they come in. Bring a pair of scissors to cut through the plastic tubs, wear clothes that can get a bit dirty, and come with a helpful smile.

We also need help with set up and clean up. Set up happens Friday evening before the sale, and involves setting up tables, hanging plant identification signs, and moving plants from the truck to the tables in the gym.

You can sign up to volunteer online for a two hour time slot. Sign up for two time slots if you can!

What: Hyattsville Elementary School PTA’s 7th Annual Native Plant Sale
When: May 14 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Where: HES Gym, 5311 43rd Ave., Hyattsville, MD 20781
Contact: Bart Lawrence,

For more about the sale, visit the PTA’s Native Plant Sale page.
