The Zombies are coming!

Mark your calendar for October 14, 2017, for the second Hyattsville Zombie Run 5K. The Halloween themed 5K race is USATF certified and timed, and the 1 Mile Kids’ Challenge and 1K Family Fun Run are opportunities for everyone to participate. Dress up as a zombie or any Halloween costume to add to the fun! All races will start and finish at Magruder Park.

This event is hosted by the Hyattsville Elementary School PTA and proceeds will support HES, including the purchase of art supplies, musical instruments, coats for students, field trips, teacher professional development, and more.

How can you be a part of this fun event?

Become an individual fundraiser for your school and
WIN A NEW BIKE, KINDLE FIRE, OR MOVIE PRIZE PACK!

How it works:
When you register to run in the Hyattsville Zombie Run, you can also set up a fundraising page that allows your friends and family to sponsor you. Every dollar raised through this fundraising page goes directly to the HES PTA.

For every $10 you raise by 9pm on October 13th, your name will be entered into a raffle to be held on race day.

Prizes:
1st prize is a bike from Arrow Bicycle, valued up to $500!
2nd place is a Kindle Fire
3rd place will be a gift package from Regal Cinema

How to do it:

  • Sign up for the Zombie Run now at https://runsignup.com/Race/MD/Hyattsville/HyattsvilleZombieRun
  • When you register, it will ask if you would like to become a “Fundraiser”. Click on the Fundraiser banner.
  • Follow the directions to complete the online form, making sure that you select your own school from the dropdown box under “Fundraiser Type.”
  • Please include a personal message about why this is important to you and that the money raised will go to your school’s PTA. Upload a picture if you can!
  • After you complete registration, you will receive an email with your unique website. Share this link with everyone you know and start training for race day!

Notice to Neighbors: Some roads will be closed and parking will be restricted along the race route on the morning of the race, from 6:00 to 11:00 am. To see which streets are affected, visit

First Day of School Parents Coffee

It’s the first day of school and you are sending your child off to a new classroom. Join your fellow parents right after drop off to chat with other parents, and have some coffee and snacks.

Principal Bey and the PTA officer team will be there to answer questions, renew your PTA membership for this school year, and share information about the 2017 Zombie Run. Please stay for the PTA vote on the 2017-2018 PTA budget!

The cafeteria will be open to parents from 7:45 to 8:30. The coffee is complimentary.

Some dates have changed–please update your calendar!

August 17 (tomorrow)–there will not be an ice cream social at HES as previously advertised. Instead, there will be a meet and greet at the City of Hyattsville Summer Jam.

August 18--Come to the Hyattsville Summer Jam at Magruder Park, 6:30-8:30. Principal Bey will be there to introduce our new Assistant Principal, Duff Durkin. New staff have also been invited. As usual, the Summer Jam will feature a bounce house, face painters, balloon animals, and live music (Black Masala!). If wet weather is predicted, the event may move to the Hyattsville Municipal Building on Gallatin, so please check the city’s website for updates.

August 31–Kindergarten orientation is at HES, 11:00-12:00. Parents will meet with Principal Bey to become familiar with school policies and procedures, while the new students will go to the classrooms with the kindergarten teachers. If you have questions, contact the main office at HES, at 301-209-5800.

Rising Kindergartner Meet-up, August 6

What: HES Rising Kindergartner Meet-Up
When: August 6, 10:30-12:30
Where: King Park on Gallatin Street
Why: To meet and talk to other HES kindergartners and families

Do you have a rising HES kindergartner, and want to get to know other kindergarten families? Join other families of rising HES kindergartners for a getting to know you meet up.

Thinking about HES in the future for your pre-schooler? Come to meet other HES families.

Already at HES and willing to share your knowledge of the school? Please join us, too!

The HES PTA will have some drinks and snacks on hand. Parents can chat while kids make new friends on the playground.

DATES TO ADD TO YOUR CALENDAR:

August 17, 6:00-7:00 pm: Ice Cream Social. Come talk with Principal Teresa Bey, and meet our new Assistant Principal and our new teachers.

September 14, 5:30-7:00: Back to School Night. Visit your child’s classroom and see what his/her day is like.

KINDERGARTEN REGISTRATION

Registration is open NOW. If your child is not already registered for kindergarten, please go to HES to register your kindergartner as soon as possible. Registering helps the school make appropriate plans for the number of students, teachers, and classrooms that will be needed in the fall. Waiting to register until late summer or the start of school can be disruptive for children at an already uncertain time. Students who have already been attending HES do not need to register again.

To register your kindergartner, bring these documents to the main office of HES:

  • Birth Certificate
  • Immunization Records
  • Proof of Residency: can be a copy of your mortgage statement, tax assessment or current lease

Field Days are coming!

Please help make the days amazing for our students. Mr. Hook needs some parent volunteers to help run the games.

WHERE:
Parent volunteers should meet Mr. Hook at Magruder Park at 8:45 am. The individual events will run in the morning from 9:15-11:15. There will be a box lunch delivered to the park, and then the class events will run in the afternoon until about 1:00. We need parents to be lunch helpers, time keepers, heat organizers, and generals. Bring your own water bottle!

WHEN:
5th Grade is May 16 (rain date May 17)
4th Grade is May 18 (rain date May 19)
K/1st Grades are May 23 (rain date May 24)
2nd/3rd Grades are May 25 (rain date May 26)

HOW:
